4th September 2010

Four days on the trot and still the Bargate Drain produces double figure weights. Last Tuesday (24th August) saw the RAF East Midlands league use much the same pegs as previous days and here nets of roach and skimmers brought 10lbs plus weights to the top three anglers, with good backing weights to go with them. Again a mixture of hemp and pinkie, in conjunction with pole at close range did the most damage as Dusty Kiddell just held off the opposition, winning with a mere 1 ½ ozs to spare. Graham Welton was that unfortunate angler but he in turn clinched second in a close battle with Al Dyer, finishing just 4ozs ahead.
1 Dusty Kiddell 10lbs 6ozs;
2 Graham Welton 10lbs 4 ½ozs;
3 Al Dyer 10lbs;
4 Andy Dixon 8lbs 15 ½ozs.
On to Saturday and the same venue hosted the BDAA championship covering a couple of dozen pegs. similar tactics for most of those involved with baits ranging from pinkie and caster through to hemp, all fished over groundbait. So similar that in fact the top two anglers – being Steve Winter and Craig Crow – tied for the top spot with two more good nets of mainly roach. On this occasion weights then fell away quickly with Andy Dillamore just keeping his nose in front of Grimsby's Mick Tamms, both of those taking mixed bags of roach, perch and skimmers.

3 Andy Dillamore 7lbs 3ozs;
4 Mick Tamms Grimsby 6lbs 14ozs.
Next Saturday will see the BDAA Memorial match take place on the Bargate Drain and those interested in taking part should ring Mark Cook on 01205 363333 or 07947859747 for tickets at £3.50 plus optional pools on the morning.
The Monday evening matches will continue next week and will do so for another week or two whilst the light lasts, and to maintain a 3hr competition anglers are asked to meet 4pm on the Windsor Bank.
Fishtoft AC paid a visit to the Moon Lake complex on Sunday and struggled in comparison to recent results from here. Perhaps the heavy showers and gale force winds had some bearing as no fish above 2lbs were taken, the bulk of catches consisting of those smaller specimens. The groundbait feeder must be the favourite on such as these conditions and combining this with pellet Nick Mummery made this into a victory over Ben Brighton. Ben alternated feeder and pole with both pellet and cat food to come within an inch of the top spot, probably just one fish separating the top two. Janusz Kedzierski fell a few pounds short in third, as did Gordon Manning in fourth, both opting for pellet with pole at close range.
1 Nick Mummery 37lbs 4ozs;
2 Ben Brighton 35lbs 2ozs;
3 Janusz Kedzierski 26lbs 14ozs;
4 Gordon Manning 23lbs 8ozs.
Next Sunday meet McDonalds, Spalding at 7am for the Coronation Channel.
The Bain Valley fishery confirmed the downturn in weights and not only because of day to day conditions but a drop in water temperature, due mainly to a combination of those heavy downpours and colder nights, also has a major effect on feeding patterns.
Gale force winds hampered last Tuesday’s proceedings (24th August) as Mick Jennings held on to win by less than 10lbs to spare over his nearest rival. This was Sean Jones who in turn came through to take second with only 2lbs or so in front of Mick Morgan.
1 Mick Jennings 74lbs 14ozs;
2 Sean Jones 65lbs 9ozs;
3 Mick Morgan 63lbs 5ozs.
Thursday saw anglers receive a good soaking, or they would have done if not under their umbrellas, and consequently weights were in effect a little worse than the Tuesday sweep. Pete Jubbs chalked up a more comfortable victory as Mick Jennings had to settle for second this time with nets of small carp in the 60lbs range. After that most anglers could do no better than 30lbs plus weights, apart from John Cullis, that is, with a little over 50lbs to come home in third.
1 Pete Jubbs 81lbs 11ozs; 2 Mick Jennings 65lbs 7ozs; 3 John Cullis 51lbs 4ozs.
