Tony Burman has now added a course round up to his features. Here's this weeks installment.
Country Park series draws to a close
It is with a little sadness that I write this week’s article. The Country Park Monday night matches drew to a close last Monday. This means that the nights are pulling in and winter is on its way. This year the matches were very well attended at the start as the lake fished extremely well, with bumper catches of bream. As the matches progressed anglers also had excellent catches of roach on the pole and the waggler. Mick Balls and John Kimpson have been doing these matches for some time and they are very well run and also there is a lot of friendly banter at the matches. One thing that has increased is the amount of people who actually come down and watch the fishing. This was the same with the boating lake matches; this is a good thing for the sport and encourages more people to have a go. It would be nice to get a good sponsor and have the full lake at country park one Sunday and see how many people we would get coming down. Anyone interested in sponsoring such an event please let me know.
On Monday the star of this year matches Sam Smith drew peg 30 and every one thought that will be that. Especially as on his first cast he was into a fish. But it was not Sam’s usual prey it was the roach that had descended on Sam’s bait. John Atkinson on peg 4 was also into fish from the off but he was finding the skimmers and the bream. Other anglers were struggling to get a bite. Most people were struggling to get a bite or a sign of a fish. Steve Smalley was continuing his homework from tutor and new qualified level 2 coach Mick Balls. Steve was fishing the float and he was getting roach at a lot quicker pace than usual. Just going back to Mick big congratulations to him he has just passed his level 2 coaching badge and will no doubt be a coach who will be in demand with his wealth of knowledge and experience. He is also a very good tutor as I have learnt from first hand experience.
The light was going but this signalled the fish to come on the feed I was on peg 1 and could have done with the match going on I had just started to catch the bream. But no one could stop John Atkinson on the night he finished up with 13.8lb. Second was yours truly with 9.4lbs and Dave Smith was third with 7lb.
There is to be a match in October with all the boating lake and country park anglers, they have decided to go Saltfleetby Fisheries on the 3rd October. Anglers who are wishing to go please go and give your money to John Atkinson at the shop. the match is by invitations and fished at least 7 between the country park and the boating lake. . I also understand that John Kimpson is going to organise some weekend matches at the country park .
Saltfleetby fisheries next and it was Darren Smith and Nathan Underwood who were battling out against each other once again. It was the Darren who once again managed to get the upper hand; he was on peg 10 and got an amazing 93.10lbs. Bearing in mind these are only 5hour matches. Second in was Nathan Underwood he was next door on Peg 9 he weighed in 87.14lbs so it was very close. Next in was Mike Newman from Grimsby with 72lbs off peg 16. The next open match is this Sunday and it is the last one that starts at 2pm. It then goes to a 9am start.
Wold View had a good weekend. The help Heroes Match was held on the Silver lake on the Sunday but unfortunately the organiser never left the results behind. Whilst that match was going there was another open being held on the Gold lake . First in was Denis Vause, he was not very happy with his draw he had been there the day before and did not do very well. I do not whether this was in frustration or a plan, but he kicked over a full bag of pellets in front of his peg. As the match progressed all he could see was tail patterns from the carp. He went down the edge and managed to get 91.4lbs. Second in Danny Croft fishing from peg 19 he had 76.8lbs Tim Chapman was third with 61.10lb and Dave Mountford fourth 59.8lb.
On the Saturday it was on Gold again and Dave Mountford was in impressive form off peg 17 he had 58lbs . Second Mr. Andy Bryant.. In the articles I have put Andy’s full name in and everyone is wondering who this man winning is all these matches. He is better known as Chippa, so now you have it Third Kyme Miesiner 39.4lbs.
The Veterans on Tuesday were on the Bronze Lake and they had some decent fishing. John Isted fishing the pellet had some right lumps for a total weight of 81.4lbs I understand that he was catching all through the day and really enjoy his days fishing well done John. Next in Charlie Withers 35lbs and third Bill Marsh 25lbs.
Now we come to Wednesday on the Gold. It was an excellent turn out. In past weeks the fishing on the Wednesdays has been spot on. The golden peg was drawn peg and Hull based star Chris Mack who has been doing very well lately got the lucky peg no 17 and he likes to be on that side of the lake. He did not take long to get in the fish deciding to fish the feeder he got a couple of fish then went to the pole and the fish were straight in front of him and he continued to catch through out the match. I was on Peg 11 and was in quandary were to fish, the feeder is usually good from this peg but it did not want to know I had one fish and that was that. The longer pole line did not produce anything either. I went next to the reeds and manged to get a few fish. This dried up on me. I kept feeding to my right but nothing there until the last hour when it suddenly came to life in only inches of water but the fish were on the food that I put here earlier. Every time I looked to my left Stevie Deans was into a big fish, but unknown to me he kept getting broken off and this cost him dearly. Danny Croft was on the island and he was also catching very steadily. As there was a lot there you could not see all the anglers and I was not sure if any of the anglers had caught round the corner. Chris Mack was one of the first to weigh and the scales bounced round to 69.8lb, this was good enough to secure victory for Chris and give him the golden peg money. Next in was yours truly with 60.8lbs and third in Danny Croft 54lbs
Hunters Lodge Fisheries at Elsham had their first thirty pound carp landed this week. It was caught by Brigg angler Mark Bradley he was using a spicy tuna and white chocolate boilie. Fishing in the Kestrel lake the mirror carp weighed in at 30.2lb. This is a cracking fish and other anglers have been having good results from this water . Trev Hodgson of Melton Ross had 7 carp averaging 15lb from the same lake. If you are interested in fishing this water please contact martin on 01652 680691.
The other lakes in the complex have also been fishing well. So it just does not cater for the specimen anglers it also offers plenty of different species for the angler to test his or her wits against.
Here is how the other lakes are doing
Willows
Plenty of good catches being caught with carp up to 19lb, best bait is chocolate malt or scopex open water swims producing most fish.
Kingfisher
Pleant of action from Tench and crucians being caught with nets to 30lb+, maggot producing well with luncheon meat a good alternative.
Heron
Bream showing in good numbers from island pegs to small groundbait feeders, close in on pole line roach can be caught all day on maggot.
On to the match scene and Pasture House fisheries at Barton has been in good form of late. It attracts anglers from both sides of the Humber Bridge and I understand that the attendances are increasing each week.
Last Saturdays match saw Dave Clarkson fishing from peg 36 , he was fishing tight to the aerator with pellet feeder and a banded pellet on a hair rig. He landed 64.4lbs well in front of Grimsby angler Lee Popham who was on the canal stretch and he had 46lbs. Third in Glen Collins again from the canal 45.9lbs.
Tuesday match also saw decent weights.
1, Glen Collins, Discount Tackle, Peg3, 53.12lbs.
2, Dave Clarkson, Flow Star, Peg 42, 37.8lbs.
3, Trev Davis, Bircoats A/C, Peg 7, 22.9lbs.
4, Shaun Burnett, Hull, Peg 19, 20.0lbs
Saltfleetby fisheries had a very good turn out with a good number of the Grimsby area based anglers attending . It was that peg again number 16 that produced the winner Malcolm Frost had 60.10lbs mostly caught on the pole. Next in John Cox on peg 9 he had 48.2lb and Derek Carter 45.14oz from peg 5.
