More interest in starting sea angling.

25th August 2010

I have quite a few calls this week from people wanting to start sea fishing. Some of them have been fishing on holiday and now want to take a little further. Whilst others are coarse anglers and now fancy a dabble at the sea side of things. It depends were you intend to go and how serious you want to take it. There are several tackle shops in the area and they have very experience sea anglers who know what they are talking a bout they will offer expert advice. Also be able to supply the bait you need. But by going to these people who know what they are doing , it will actually save you money. The amount of people I know who have spent a lot of money on the wrong equipment.
If possible go with a friend or ask at the tackle shop if there is any one you can go with locally. Trying to cast for the first time is a mine field, but some one who goes regularly will soon have you in the water and hopefully catching fish.
Rods you do not want something that is too stiff for normal beach fishing but if you intend to go rock fishing then you want something to stand up to the rigours of the rough stuff. But I would never encourage any one to start off fishing from the rocks you have to know what you are doing.
Reels fixed spools are fairly fool proof and they have really come down in price. Go and have a look but definitely go and talk to the local shops. George Smith is an England International and both he and his shop manager Adie Cooper are very experience and are always willing to pass on information. Their contact number is 01472 693771 At Cleethorpes Angling John Atkinson also knows what he is talking about and will give the right advice. He can be contacted on 01472 602002 There are other tackle shops who also have plenty of tackle on offer and some one will be willing to offer help and advice. There is also a new shop opened in Wellowgate, they opened this week and are stocking plenty of sea angling tackle. They have a very wide selection of different leads that may come in various situations.
On the boat side go out with a charter boat there are several in the area they will advise you on different styles and tackle that you may need. Basically there are two styles that we do in the Humber either up tiding which means casting up tide with a longer boat rod or down tiding which means basically dropping down the side of the boat with a shorter rod.. The best time for the cod in the river is around the end of October to December. But even this time of year if the charter boat takes you to the right place you have a cracking days sport, with many different species now being caught.
When you get more involved in sea fishing I would advise you to join a club Humber Sea Angling Club for the shore and the Humber Cruising Association boat angling section. They are very good clubs and have a wealth of knowledge and experience.
Humber SAC were in action last week the top weight was Simon Drayton was top man with 13 fish for 7lb 4oz , Second in was Adie Cooper 17 fish for 5.13oz and third Garry Hutson 4.5lb 1o fish. The biggest flatfish caught was a 35cm flounder caught by Simon Drayton. . The clubs next match is at Chapel point. Last weeks boat match was called off due to the bad weather. I understand that when the boats can get out there is still tope around and in the river plenty of smooth hounds . There has also been a few whiting showing already. Please keep the reports coming in.
